(WIP) Table Folly

The Christmas party. Of course, it involves boozing it up for the lulz.
Haruko and Duxx dance on the table (and speaking of Duxx, you can blame it on this... so, SO facepalm-y but extremely fitting) with Velan, Aries and Spoony cheering them on.

And then there was the issue of integrating the "under the table" parts.

Hikaru hides under the table to escape the shenanigans (Hikaru + alcohol = NO; Black Dragons normally have awesome beer tolerance but she is a rare exception) and Numair hides next to her.
It's an awkward place, but why not take advantage of it...?
...until Chelsea dives under the table all "WAAAAAAH HELP" and totally ruins the moment. XD

I used a much lighter blue for the wireframe and it was really lightly scribbled, so it'll probably make more sense when it's inked.

---

Beyond my iPod Touch and yesterday's iTunes card there was no other loot to speak of. (But, who cares, when I reload in January, I'm kicking down Amazon's door for some loot raiding. Yum, free shipping and no sales tax!)
Robert did, however, get Windows 7, which is yay since he's been on XP since '04 and he wanted to make the jump anyhow. I'm making him put in Hamachi, though... >_>; should make it easier to pass links and WoW add-ons between each other, at least.

Not quite faceless, but indication of my laziness to draw a bunch of generic human (and other racial) kids.

Though, I am most likely going to change that crowd of mortified/not-amused anony-kids staring at Numair into a bunch of Prinnies, staring him down since they want their paychecks. "When are you gonna pay us, dood?" "Yeah, we busted ass setting up decorations, dood!" "Dood!"

...ah, I have some strange Prinny fixation.

Dood.

(Instant Ramen Sketchbook) Snowscheme '09 Part 6: Phil Day

It used to be that for elves, the idea of a royal birthday party was some stuffy-ass ball in the castle. Not anymore after Yggdrasil officially allied with the demons of neighboring Niflheim!
And damn right, Paring's gonna pull out all the stops and haul his Santa Prinny Squad and other demon flunkies with him across the border to turn Yggdrasil into EPIC DANCE PARTY. Hell, make it an island-wide Christmas party while he's at it, given the proximity to 12/25.
It gets broadcast on Asgard Network, of course-- Paring himself serves as the MC, but hands the mic over to Phil to let the old dude say a few words for the crowd (and to yuk it up for photographers).

Also... Prinny cameraman.
Doooooood.

This one is from Episode 0. Phil and Paring! (and I haven't drawn either of them in a reeeeeally long time.)

Because Phil's birthday is on 12/17 (gee, I wonder why), and Paring is his party-obsessed BFF... naturally a huge party ensues and the whole thing is considered an island-wide holiday party in addition to celebrating Phil's birthday. Faintly hinted to in the background is a Prinny DJ, though surely there are other Prinny workers and other party-goers (elves, demons and Prinnies).

Iggy the Theater

Yggdrasil is a media center. Therefore, it seems fitting that he should behave as such on occasion. So, for the past few hours I've been tinkering with him on that front (by the way, it's still effing cold in here)

First off... whatever anyone tells you about Boxee, ignore it. Boxee sucks. True, it's only in alpha for now, so I'll have to revisit it later as it's further developed, but I found it overall to be very very MEH. Its metadata scraping is quite mediocre and couldn't get half of my stuff right, and it's just a chore to navigate... so screw that.

If you are packing Windows 7, however, its version of Media Center is AWESOME out of the box (hi, access to Netflix and CBS's library and parts of NBC/MSNBC and some others). It's vastly improved from the Vista version, in terms of being able to get around and run things other than TV, so if you don't have a TV tuner-- I don't because I use Slingbox-- you aren't SOL this time.
If you want to crank it up even further, though, and you don't mind doing a little work (mostly renaming and such), then loot MediaBrowser, MetaBrowser and MediaRenamer. Depending on how big your media pile is, you're looking at spending an hour or so renaming and pulling metadata, but it's worth it since you'll be able to loot cover images and other shinies, and everything just looks much more polished.

Also don't forget to loot a codec pack and, if you're running 64-bit, its add-on as needed (I'm partial to K-Lite but just about any major pack will do). And for those among us whose stash is stuffed with Matroska (MKV) files, this should tell you how to force WMC to let you run that file type. (BTW, Hack7MC is an awesome blog if you want to twink out WMC on 7 even further.

MKV files are kinda why I built Iggy to begin with. See, things like the PS3 and Slingcatcher don't like MKV files (and have pretty lousy support for even standard files that don't use a specific grouping of codecs). Surely the developers could yank some hyper-technical explanation, but it's largely assumed that they omit support for MKV because it's often affiliated with LOLZ TORRENTS AND PIRACY. It's not really fair to blow off MKV (and the torrent file type for that matter) because of what it's used for. Shame on you, Sony and SlingMedia and other major media device makers, for hating on MKV!

Ahem...

All that said, there are some things I would like to see in WMC (most likely they'd be via plugins):

- Proper support for Hulu (and Sling.com, which carries much of Hulu's library in addition to its own stash). Currently the only known workaround is the Hulu integrator which is less of an "integrator" and more of a "close WMC, launch Hulu Desktop" widget

- YouTube support (I am honestly surprised that this wasn't included out of the box. Apparently there was a YouTube plugin for the Vista incarnation of WMC but it hasn't been updated/ported to 7 yet.)

- addition of other IPTV channels into Internet TV (sup, Revision3 and TWiT)

and finally...

- Slingbox support. Dear god, WANT. Add it as a plugin, as an Internet TV channel, or as a subfeature of the actual TV section, but FFS, just add it already. I know it can be done because there's already a Flash-powered version of the Slingbox client and while Netflix streaming runs on Silverlight, the method of shoehorning it into WMC can't be that much different than Flash (else how would one be able to tap into the CBS library?). Please please pretty please write a plugin for WMC, SlingMedia? ;_;

Welp, that's all for now.

also, brendala you might want to dig around inside Iggy sometime, I looted some more Disney Afternoon you might want to pull. >_>;

Good god Time Warner is SLOOOOW to patch.

Also:
I think our router is on the fritz. Wireless radio keeps dropping, to the point where it pretty much dies once or twice a day.
To be fair, though, we've had it since Wireless-N went into beta, and we have a crapton of wireless stuff... but it's still damned annoying when I have to go reset the router daily.
Don't have the coins to replace it right now but in January, we're swapping it out and stacking two Gigabit ethernet switches on it so I can migrate as much as posible over to wired to reduce the wireless congestion.
I'ma probably going to have to get a new Wireless-N card for Dinah, too-- she keeps dropping her wireless signal mid-load and I got her card at the same time as the router (it might have even come with the router).

Bleh, still haven't been able to draw because it's so cold.
I'm thinking I need to eat a freaking fire flower or something.

Chilly Writer's Block

Do you think society puts too much pressure on people to be in relationships and/or have children? Do you think this ostracizes people who would be perfectly content to remain single and/or child-free? Is this pressure worse around the holidays?

View 1423 Answers

Yes. And quite frankly, they can go eff themselves.

I have never wanted children because of the barely-not-considered-abuse-but-sure-as-hell-feels-like-it that continues to haunt me. Not only have I never felt I had anything to offer a child, I often catch myself having horrible thoughts I dare not repeat here when I see or hear children.... even if it's on TV. Mother used to "bingo" me about the subject of children before but she has since accepted that I will not change my mind (which partially explains her going overboard with pets-- not only are they meant to replace me and my siblings, but also the grandkids that never will be).

Also as horrible as this sounds... I have an aversion to pregnant women and new mothers. Among other things I don't feel like mentioning here, they tend to look upon me like I'm a bad person, someone to be avoided, as if my presence could be toxic to their offspring. Maybe they're right. But, it goes both ways... A small part of me can't help but wonder if they will fall for the easily-sprung trap that awaits them, the one in which they lose their personalities and become so absorbed in their children that they themselves just disappear. I find the prospect of that frightening beyond words. I have enough existential crises as is, I don't want another one.

As for relationships.... no more, barring a miracle that I've lost hope in. I've failed too many times and been worn down too much to even want to try again. I just don't have the will to do it anymore. Every time I failed it's like more and more of me dies off and sinks into the abyss... and I'm only 25. Not to mention, who the hell (beyond chubby-chasers) could look upon me without being driven to revulsion?

I realize this is all the talk of someone with no backbone and no self-confidence and that a good chunk of it can be disregarded as such, but is there not some truth to it as well? That if there is no desire and the potential for worse things, maybe it's safer to abstain? I mean, shit, I get weird looks if I as much as admit to liking a celebrity or something... it's like people think it's bizarre for me to even have those thoughts (or weirder yet, they think I'm a lesbian because I simply do not talk about having any interest in men-- but at the same time, that's better than being made fun of or worse if they knew otherwise...).

So, relationships and children... no. Do not want. I would rather live quietly with my cats. Go forth and propagate as you will, I'll have no part of it.

---

I like cold weather but this is absurd. Blastoise is unusable as a Ramen machine because his room is too damn cold. So I'm on Iggy, bundled up in 2 cloaks and 3 blankets (and it turns out our heater really IS broken and not mother BSing it as she has previously done), trying to thaw enough to do much other than watch TV. Tempted to wake Dinah just to use her as a hand-warmer, FFS. x_x

I ported the Snowscheme PSD over to Iggy in case I thaw enough to color the current WIP. Brr.

Aw smoo, there's a new patch for WoW today? Must defrost so I can patch. Gah!

(WIP) They aren't exactly rocks or hard places...

Quite obviously influenced by a similar piece involving Flonne and Etna in the Disgaea 1 artbook. However, unlike those two, Hikaru and Haruko aren't even remotely flat-chested...

Numair, not amused?
Maybe not...
If he wasn't amused, well, he probably wouldn't have taken off the antlers, for one thing. Just saying.

Feel free to pile on in the 2009 Snowscheme queue if you are so inclined (and if you're in Across or are a friend of the guild, you should be registered there ANYWAY). Much of what's in there... would be more appropriate as we get closer to Christmas Eve. One thing's for sure, though-- there WILL be a Phil/Paring-related piece on the 17th. Call it weird but I can't stand the thought of letting father's birthday slide into oblivion even if he's no longer here...

---

46F my ass, Fontana. It feels like 30 in here!
Good for Blastoise and Iggy, not so much for me! I can pile on the cloaks and such but it's moot when it's time to draw. I need to get some fingerless gloves or something...
A Varia Suit is fine too...

(Instant Ramen Sketchbook) Snowscheme 2009 Part 4: Streetside

Prontera City gets stupidly cold at night. And it just started to snow. Does that stop a drunken alien in a cocktail dress, a demon bard and a couple of Santa Prinnies? HELL NO. Haruko, Spoony and two prinnies set up shop on some corner and perform drunken carols for lulz and maybe some booze monies.

Tried a different lighting method here since it seemed more fitting for the circumstances. Made for a faster coloring job but it's obviously situational. :P
Also this is, again, conveniently composed and sized for near-effortless wallpaper usage.

Well, smoo.

Apparently, yesterday was National Cookie Day. No wonder Mrs. Fields kept sending me coupon codes and such (well, more than the usual).

Though... apparently December is a clusterfwegh of National (food) Days. The 1st was National Pie Day. Today (the 5th) is Repeal of Prohibition Day.

Other particular food days of interest:

12/8: National Chocolate Brownie Day
12/12: National Cocoa Day
12/15: National Cupcake Day (note to self: tweet this to Tara Platt, ultimate cupcake fangirl. I am so not kidding, she squee'd when I tweeted a Jezebel link for the Periodic Table of Cupcakes XD )
12/16: National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day (I presume pocky is included?)
12/17: National Maple Syrup Day
12/21: National Hamburger Day
12/25: National Pumpkin Pie Day (hello, whoever came up with this is a MONTH LATE)
12/31: National Champagne Day (well THAT'S convenient)

---

Dear NBC minions (or whoever they outsource to) who code iPhone app tie-ins to their shows:

Please please please make a Twitter Tracker app!
In addition to being able to replay the Twitter Tracker segments on Conan (because flash support on the iPhone/iPod Touch is dumb and only supports Google, thus locking out the NBC video archive and Hulu and just about everything except YouTube and I think Vimeo) and link the relevant Twitter accounts, there is so much fun to be had with a Twitter Tracker app-- mainly things involving stupidly-amusing text animation and abuse of the Twitter birdy!

Because, you know, this almost sadistic love of Twitter Tracker's abuse of the bird is universal. If you like Twitter, it's funny. If you HATE Twitter, it's even better! Take THAT, bird!

So, yes. Twitter Tracker app... please? :(

♥, Yoshi

...dear god I've become an iTard.

---

And now Blastoise goes to sleep while I tweak Iggy some more. It has been suggested I slap Boxee on Iggy because he is a media center box and Boxee is supposed to be the most awesome media center software EVAR!!! or something, so I may as well give it a whirl. If Lifehacker gushes over it and even does features about building a dedicated system for Boxee and there are iPhone "remote" apps for it... then it can't be mindless hype, right? >_> Guess there's only one way to find out.

Also remember this Snowscheme? Consider it a clue for the next '09 piece. >_>;

*click*

If only there was an iYoshi

iPod Touch get~
Because I consider things like phones and media players extensions of Dinah, it's been named "Celestial Rose," after Dinah's "ultimate" katana in CoH.
8gb model, which is fine since 1) my entire music collection barely takes up even that much and even so I don't carry it all with me anyway, 2) it was mostly intended for apps anyway. As far as video goes, either I can pull from YouTube (which I imagine will see a TON of use) or I can squash it down on Blastoise or Yggdrasil beforehand.

Mother put in an order for the Pogo Sketch stylus. Actually two, since she lacks one herself. Very, very much needed because I have these stubby fingers and text input on this thing is quite awkward, and I'ma need a stylus for when I loot Sketchbook Mobile and inflict the horror of mobile Ramen upon the internets. >:D Also, as expected, mother looted the earbuds-- fine, take them, for I have BLUETOOTH. Bwahahaha.

SO.
In this post, APPS. LOTS. What I've looted so far (all free stuff):

Tweetdeck
LiveJournal.app + WordPress 2 (the latter so I can re-tag posts for the AP version)
Facebook
Wells Fargo + PayPal
Google Earth
WoW Armory
Pizza Hut (Papa Johns needs to make one!)
TrackMyShipments
MSNBC + Rachel Maddow (BOOOO there's no Countdown app T_T)

What's getting looted when my stylus gets here:

Trillian
Metal Gear TOUCH
Sketchbook Mobile

What's getting looted in January when I reload on coins:

Slingplayer Mobile
LogMeIn Ignition

Also while I haven't looted it, I am GREATLY amused that there are bubble wrap apps floating around. As in, apps whose sole purpose is to POP BUBBLES. (Nintendo, why is there no such thing for the DSi? Seriously, do you know how many downloads it would get?) As much as I am meh about junk apps-- seriously, what's with all the lame attempts at sneaking porn under the radar?-- this totally gets a LOL out of me. ;P

Anything else that's fun or useful or what-have-you?

(WIP) Prinnies and Lights and the ALLIANCE THAT SHOULDN'T BE

WIP time because I started late and I'm not sure if I can finish before conking out:

This is a combination of "MOAR LIGHTS" and "Santa Prinny Squad" from the queue. First off, yes we DO have Prinnies in Ragnarok TWILIGHT and they're every bit as lazy as the ones found elsewhere except here they actually get paid a decent wage so they're more likely to, you know, work and such.

Secondly... oh snap, this time Numair's going to help Velan wire the castle with lights?! WTF?! Because normally it's Numair holding Hikaru back from footstomping Velan into oblivion as she thinks he means to blow up the castle. But it seems that neophoenixte is really NeoTimTaylorTE* and has a taste for overkill on light displays, and such must be reflected here. While Velan is usually involved in a tertiary role in all of Haruko's pranks that she plays on Numair, on occasion Numair and Velan actually do get along... if only because Velan is useful for cookies on demand. I imagine their alliance this time involves cookies.

The Prinny Squad here, though, freaks out all the same. "They're teaming up, dood!" "We're screwed, dood!" "Hikaru's not gonna like this, dood!" and such.

Now, there's a bit of a technical snafu that I decided to keep in here for hilarity. See, in this world, electrical devices are powered by mana, so things like outlets are... not necessary-- power is sucked from free mana in the air. Yet in these pics, there is a power outlet! Nonsense, because one need only cast a very low-level lightning spell to start up string lights. But... I'm leaving in the outlet because it's always been there and to imagine Hikaru freaking out as Velan VERY SLOWLY about to plug in the lights is funny. :P

* I always liked the Christmas episodes of Home Improvement. Sneakiest under-the-radar method of saying "asshole neighbor" ever-- dude, Doc Johnson, the Proctologist? XD Sailed over my head as a kid, but now... hm. I think I should go raid YouTube now...

Touchy-feely portable ramen

...Remember how I made a crack about what would happen if Corel ported Painter to the iPhone or someone pulls something similar? >_>

'sup, Sketchbook Mobile. Holy crap. Natural media emulation, layers (even 3 is awesome) and support for WIP-saving and exporting PSDs? DO WANT, MUST HAAAAVE. O_O I mean, crap, this might as well be "Painter for iPhone!"

Oh yes. This goes on the insta-loot list when my Touch gets here. So, even when I'm out, I can still get my Ramen on. Bwahahahaha!

Also I'm thinking I should probably obtain or rig a stylus of some kind since I have these big stubby fingers that probably won't take too well to this. Wonder if the DS stylus would work in the meantime...? >_>;

(Instant Ramen Sketchbook) Snowscheme 2009 Part 2: Mistle-Omb

To kiss under mistletoe at Christmas is romantic.
To kiss under Mistle-ombs is... explosive.

Denlan is relentless... even if he should claim every other eligible lady in Across, Hikaru would forever be beyond his reach, having already chosen.
Ordinarily Numair would simply punish Denlan's interference by setting his head on fire, but sometimes this kind of flagrant infringment calls for more... appropriate measures.

...measures like strategic placement of Mistle-ombs-- Bob-Ombs that mimic mistletoe.

Fun is too much to contain

Add another item to the list of "too awesome to wait it out over."
Mother is all "by the way, you WILL loot that iPod Touch as soon as it gets here, you'd be insane to wait to use something that fun."

...XD;

I was going to tell her that it doesn't matter if I take ownership now or on the 25th since unless the thing comes with an iTunes card or 60 coins suddenly appear in the Magic Coin Block, I won't be able to load up on ALL the paid apps I was eyeing until I reload. (Trillian, yes, because it's only $5) I also realize I need to code a static, iPod Touch-friendly version of my Altima Network Remote Dashboard (and if you are interested, you can fiddle with its incomplete-for-the-moment Flash version here) and potentially Ayarane Project, too. I'm pretty sure the iPod Touch's browser probably won't take kindly to the AP version with its columns and such, har har har. Though I do hear that its browser is MUCH better than the one on the PSP.

I don't know where this thing's shipping from, so I'm just going to assume that Tuesday is the earliest it could get here.. probably longer, though, because mother had it engraved. :P
And because I KNOW someone is going to ask... I consider things like my phone (and I guess this iPod Touch) to be extensions of Dinah, so I guess it would be appropriate to name it after a ninja weapon, and cut a Dinah wallpaper.

...oh hi, Costco pizza. Omnomnomnom. :O~

Wait... I know why mother wants me to take the Touch right away-- EARBUDS! She burns through those things like crazy! Well, she can have them, I hate earbuds and Bluetooth headphones are so much better!

Trolling for Peanuts

So I went downstairs to get food and while on standby, I watched A Boy Named Charlie Brown. Now, I like Peanuts as much as the next guy but like a lot of things I saw as a kid, it was a completely different experience to revisit it as an adult.

Let me preface with this: Compared to the TV series and specials, the movies are quite a bit more SERIOUS BUSINESS and this one was all kinds of f'd up. It is often said that Snoopy, Come Home is the most depressing of the movies... hell no! That one had a happy ending, this was more or less the Peanuts version of End of Evangelion!

Really, this one was 90-ish minutes of just about EVERYONE trolling poor Charlie Brown (and that eventually includes Linus... and he's supposed to be the dude's BFF?!), and this is on top of his own self-loathing and depression. They suddenly become nice to him when he starts doing things right and then turn on him when the pressure becomes too much and he bombs the last word at the Radio City finals... wow. One must wonder how much worse the fallout would be if this played out today. Lucy would totally be at home among the /b/-tards. >:P

(Actually, weren't there honest-to-god research papers and stuff written to that effect? I know there was one analysis done that says that Schroeder is most likely gay. I'm pretty sure that was mentioned on MetaFilter quite awhile back...)

And the takeaway message from everything that happened is "okay, the world didn't end... but you're going to fail all over again tomorrow, sucker!"

"Way to overthink it, Yoshi," you might be thinking. And I may very well be. But give it a spin if you haven't seen it for awhile. All the stupidly-amusing sequences involving Snoopy aside, you'll probably find yourself doing a bit of double-takes, too!

I nodded off on the couch and it's too late now to boot up Blastoise.

Letters to random things (mostly inanimate objects)

because I am bored. Woohoo!

Dear sun: Stop playing peekaboo and make up your mind already. It's distracting >_>;

Dear glasses: Stop falling off when I bend over to pick up my laser mouse that Kestine keeps batting off the bed.

Dear Dinah: Why are you so quick to jump to 100% CPU usage and thus maximum fan speed? WTF. (side note: do not let her hit 160F, that would be her "death" temp)

Dear Yggdrasil: Why can't I crank your text size up to 150%? :( Yet I can do it on Blastoise and Dinah, what the hell....

Dear bed: Please stop trying to kill me, I'd rather sleep on you than this creaky-ass chair.

Dear splinter or toenail that I stepped on and got embedded in my heel: Hurry up and break down already, it stings :(

Dear router: Why do you keep dropping wireless radio? Dropping wifi but leaving ethernet alone = NOT AMUSED.

Dear self: Stop freaking out about... that. You know what I'm talking about. You know they mean well but are comple-- ooh, a kitty!

---

I THINK we're going to see 2012 today. Though with the rain this morning and such, that might have thrown things off. Hm.
Until I wake up completely and figure out which Snowscheme to do next, I'm going to wrap up in these blankets and wach the TWiT live stream for awhile. >_>;

Brr. Again.
